Annual Archdiocesan Respect Life Mass
October 8, 2017

The Annual Archdiocesan Respect Life Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Leonard P. Blair at the Cathedral of St. Joseph at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 8, 2017. A large crowd was in attendance including many parish pro-life representatives from churches in the Archdiocese. Under the direction of Dr. Ezequiel Menendez, Director of Music, the Cathedral was filled with organ music and
song.

In his homily, Archbishop Blair stressed the dignity of human life at all stages and in all states of life. Pope Francis’ homilies and speeches provided life-affirming themes for the Archbishop’s prayerful message.  Archbishop Blair cited Pope Francis’ fundamental message to us to protect all human life in all its stages, and also his affirmation of the traditional family wherein life is to be defended and protected.

Archbishop Blair reiterated Pope Francis’ admonition that the love of all fellow persons is fundamental and is a reflection of Christ’s unconditional love of each of us. He further cited the concept of “accompanying” the wounded. Those who are wounded are those who have been involved in acts that deny the protection of life and are hurt by those actions. Those who accompany them through their healing are doing the Lord’s work: pregnancy resource centers, Rachel’s Vineyard, those fighting against legislation that disrespects human life.

Archbishop Blair thanked the recipients of the St. Gianna Beretta Molla Medals for their work and commitment to all human life and presented them individually to:

  • Reverend Robert Landback, Pastor, Our Lady of Fatima, Yalesville

  • Mr. Cary M. Dupont, President, Saint Paul Catholic High School, Bristol

  • Mr. Mike Ferraro, Parish Pro-Life Co-Founder and Representative, Saint Mary  Parish, Branford

  • Mrs. Mary Lou Peters, Pro-Life Advocate and Representative, Saint Damien of Molokai Parish, Windsor

These recipients have dedicated much of their lives to pro-life work, each in his or her unique way.

After Mass, Archbishop Blair presented each parish pro-life representative with a candle representing life and light. He thanked all for their commitment to life and for joining one another at Mass.
